Wanna see a big spider?

I love Hawaii, but, for crying out loud, someone has got to warn me when the cane spiders are going to make an appearance.

I know it's kind of hard to see in this picture, but look for the glowing eyes above the closet door.

Here it is moving across the ceiling, presumably because that will make it easier to jump on my head.

I would have gotten some better pictures, but that would have required actually standing in the room, and I did not want to challenge the authority of the spider.  Any spider that is big enough that you can see its eyes glowing in a picture wins.  It can have the room.

Here's the thing about cane spiders:  They're too big to smash-I don't want to clean that up; they're freakin' fast, so it's hard to get close enough to smash them anyway; and they will jump at you, so even if you do get close enough to smash them, they will run at you and make you jump and scream like a little girl. Bug spray?  I've seen one of these take almost half a can before it finally lay down in a soaking ball on the floor only to jump up a few minutes later, shake it off and start moving again.  Granted, it was moving a little more slowly, but it was still moving.  Besides, I don't really want to kill them, I just don't want them hanging out anywhere where they can jump on my head.  So, when I see one, I move as far away from it as possible and then I just stare at it in horror for a while trying to think of some way to get rid of it and then I give up and start taking pictures or video of it.  Because what else is there to do besides document the situation and then use the pictures to freak other people out?

If it's any consolation we have Wolf Spiders here in NC that also get pretty big, but they usually stay outside. :)

OMG! I would've screamed...and then passed out. I'm such a baby when it comes to spiders.

sweet bay-Eeew! Wolf Spiders are big and squishy too, aren't they? And furry?

Liza-That's what I said!

Anna-No, no, no! You can't pass out-you must remain alert and able to move quickly! LOL! I used to be a huge baby about spiders too, but after living here for a few years, if it's not a cane spider, it just isn't worth getting excited about. (Unless maybe it was a wolf spider!)

Dreamybee, indeed they are. But I have seen them catch horse flies, so they are my friends. Especially as long as they stay outside. :)

Wow, that is the most INSANE looking spider. Glowing eyes? If you had just told me in person, I wouldn't have believed it lol. Good thing you got pics!

I'm Kyna, btw. Nice to meet you :D Your name caught my eye, because my husband calls me Bee, and I think he's called me Dreamy Bee on occasion lol.

Holy cow! Will one of your dogs chase it, or are they afraid of it? I would be.

I'm going to have dreams about giant spiders now. Great! :)

That does look like a beast you need to keep an eye on!

sweet bay-I agree; as long as they are outside and not on my head, they are OK.

Kyna-Nice to meet you too. That's funny about our names-mine isn't really a nick name or anything, it just sort of came about as a combination of what I originally had in mind when I started this blog and the fact that I like to garden...and there you go!

Crazy about the eyes, right? The funny thing is, I had the red-eye reduction set on my camera! So at least I didn't have to go in and fix 8 little red eyes.

softdrink-Imagine if I'd splatted it!

Mike-I have one that might. I didn't think about that. I'm not sure how I would have gotten her onto the ceiling though. LOL.

Jeanne-You definitely need to keep an eye on these guys. Even worse than seeing one, is seeing one and then NOT seeing it!

I feel exactly the same way. I do NOT like spiders, and like you, I would not like to clean up a big mess from a big spider either. I usually get my husband (which squashes my usual feminist stance), but annoyingly, half the time, he's too slow (i think he does it on purpose sometimes, and just doesn't put the effort into is) and "oops, it got away". When we were young, my sister and I would usually put bowls and things over spiders for my mom to take care of. Once the spider was on the wall, so I quickly covered it with a tissue box whild she got the duct tape. We completely sealed that tissue box to the wall. It was really funny.

Wendy-I bet your mom was thrilled when she found that! LOL! I give in to my girl instincts too when it comes to cane spiders. My husband had to get out of bed to deal with this. Some things just aren't worth the pride.
